Theory and Practice of Land Conservation and Protected Areas

This course is an in-depth introduction to the philosophy, establishment, and operation of land conservation and the management of protected areas. Students are introduced to the scientific and policy rationale for the creation of protected lands as well as methods of classification and acquisition. Emphasis is on operational implications, problems and considerations for conservation areas at the local, state, and federal levels. Attention will be paid to the meaning of land conservation in a bio- and cultural geographic context. This course emphasizes interaction with landowners, land trusts, and conservation industry professionals. The course is open to undergraduate, graduate, and adult-education students. Space is limited.

Upon completion of the course, participants will complete a case study of protected lands, develop skills useful in conservation industry jobs, and develop a professional conservation-based portfolio. Students who complete the course are also eligible to participate in the Texas Land Trust Council LandTerns Internship Program. This program links interested individuals who complete the Land Conservation Education Course with internship opportunities at non-profit land trust organizations around the state.
